Mary Lou Retton’s Ongoing Battle with Pneumonia
Iconic Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton continues her battle against a “very rare form” of pneumonia. While earlier reports suggested that she was on the mend, her daughter, Shayla Kelley Schrepfer, provided a less optimistic update, revealing that her mother had experienced a “scary setback.”
Mary Lou Retton is celebrated as one of the most iconic US athletes to have graced Olympic gymnastics. She achieved fame by winning gold in the individual all-around competition at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. However, earlier this month, alarming reports emerged that the 55-year-old was “fighting for her life” in intensive care due to the rare form of pneumonia.
Shayla Kelley Schrepfer, one of Mary Lou Retton’s four daughters, initially offered a more positive update, stating that her mother was making “remarkable” progress. She expressed gratitude for the prayers and support, stating that Mary Lou was still in the ICU, but her path to recovery was unfolding steadily. Her breathing was improving, and her reliance on machines was decreasing.
A fundraising page set up by Retton’s family to cover medical expenses garnered over $400,000 in donations. Despite this positive response, a subsequent update from Shayla suggests that Mary Lou Retton is still facing challenges.
Shayla took to Instagram again to share the news, indicating that they had a “scary setback” after initially experiencing progress. While she didn’t provide specific details about the setback, she mentioned that her mother remains in the ICU, and they are working through some issues. Although Mary Lou had a better day, she was extremely exhausted.
Mary Lou Retton’s journey to fame began with her exceptional performance at the 1984 Olympics. Her achievements led to appearances in numerous films and TV shows during the 1980s and ’90s. She was also recognized as Sportsperson of the Year by Sports Illustrated in 1984.
The ongoing battle against this rare form of pneumonia has garnered widespread concern and support. We hope for Mary Lou Retton’s complete recovery and send our best wishes to her and her family during this challenging time.
