WATCH: GOP Senator’s Husband Snubs Kamala Harris with Awkward Handshake Refusal

Social media is buzzing over a viral moment involving Bruce Fischer, husband of Republican Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE), during her swearing-in ceremony. Many users are calling him their “spirit animal” after he appeared to snub Vice President Kamala Harris by refusing to shake her hand.

As Vice President, Harris presided over the swearing-in of U.S. senators for the 119th Congress, a role she fulfills as president of the Senate, with the power to cast tie-breaking votes. Sen. Fischer, 73, has served since 2013 and has interacted with Harris numerous times, especially given Harris’s record-setting number of tie-breaking votes.

However, during what is typically a cordial ceremony, the atmosphere turned frosty. When Harris extended her hand across the Bible, Bruce Fischer reportedly glared at her and declined the handshake, instead offering a curt nod. Harris withdrew her hand as the group posed for a photo, with Bruce Fischer notably avoiding a smile.
One user on X (formerly Twitter), @Johnnymaga, reacted to the clip, writing, “Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer’s husband is my spirit animal. Guy wanted nothing to do with Kamala.”

Many viewers found humor in the apparent snub, with some mocking the lack of respect Vice President Kamala Harris is receiving during her final weeks in office. “Lol, I could watch this on repeat! The best,” one commenter wrote. Another joked, “Protect this man at all costs!”

A third viewer took it a step further, suggesting President-elect Donald Trump should honor Bruce Fischer with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his refusal, a remark that also doubled as criticism of President Joe Biden’s decision to award the same honor to Liz Cheney.

Following her loss to Donald Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris largely retreated from public view, reappearing weeks later in a widely criticized online video where she appeared tired and out of sorts. Her public appearances have since been infrequent, and when she has appeared alongside President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, interactions between Harris and Jill have often seemed distant.

The bipartisan criticism of Harris has reportedly extended to President Biden himself, who has expressed frustration to confidants, suggesting he shouldn’t have been so easily sidelined from the race. Biden reportedly still believes he could have defeated Trump in a rematch, though questions remain about whether he could have endured another term that would have extended into his mid-eighties.

Despite polling as the most unpopular vice president in U.S. history, Harris saw her favorability ratings exceed 50% at several points during her brief White House campaign, according to some pollsters. Allies have encouraged her to consider a run for California’s governorship in 2026, while others see another presidential bid in her future.

As Harris prepares to leave the White House, it will mark the first time in over two decades that she will not be receiving a government paycheck, a factor that may influence her next steps as she navigates her political hiatus and contemplates her next move.
